October 25th, 1921 – October 15th, 2017

Our Darling mother – Marjorie Clara Davis [nee Gordon] died on October 15, 2017, just a few days before her 96th birthday in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Born in Roseau Dominica on October 25, 1921 to Dr. Edgar and Mrs. Clara Gordon, she was the youngest of four sisters, with two younger brothers. When she was a toddler the family moved to Bermuda, where she was always happiest outdoors tending her plants and her pet baby goat.

By the age of fourteen she [and her sisters] were aboard the Berengaria, on route to a convent in Britain; and eventually she faced the bombings and the horrors of the Second World War, as a nurse.

Marjorie Clara Davis Bermuda 2017

She always longed to see her mother again, but it would be twenty-five years before she could return to Bermuda after years of hardship, and extraordinary courage. Her marriage to a law student, Harold Stuart, failed and she was left destitute with two daughters – Sandra and Moira. She worked tirelessly to provide for them, and after a few years met and married her second husband Eric Davis. He was an exemplary husband and father, and after a few years Sharon was born and completed the family.

Marjorie eventually moved her family to Bermuda; saw her mother again shortly before she died, and spent thirty years there working to educate her girls and prepare them for their own independence and demonstrating her love for them in so many ways. She then retired and joined her youngest daughter, Sharon in Canada for the last and the happiest twenty four years of her life.
Marjorie’s life had been hard and often harsh. Yet her warmth, her generosity and her fascination with life drew people to her, including co-workers and others who became lifelong friends and admirers. She loved jazz and politics. She adored children and she lived for her beloved family.

Marjorie Davis is simply irreplaceable.

She will be lovingly missed by her daughters; Sandra Simmons [Millard] – Rochester, New York, Moira Stuart – London, England and Sharon Davis-Murdoch, [John]- Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, her grandson, Chris Murdoch [Stephanie] and her great grandson, Maceo Murdoch – Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
She was pre-deceased by sisters; Barbara, Joyce and Evelyn and brothers Hakim and Kenny Gordon and her only granddaughter, Shani Simmons.

Visitation will be held on October 19, 2017 from 7-9pm at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth, NS. The Funeral Service will be held at 11am, October 20, 2017 also at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street with the Rev. Father Irek Berm officiating.

Flowers are welcome or donations can be made to the Dartmouth General Hospital.

Thanks to dear friends, Yvette and Bill, the EHS paramedics who attended her with such care and the wonderful nurses and doctors at the Dartmouth General Hospital.

Rakai Malcolm Augustus Bermuda 2017[Written by Don Burgess]

Friends and family paid tribute to a “gentle giant” with an “infectious laugh”, who tragically passed away this weekend.

Rakai Augustus was killed in a car accident around 11:40pm on Saturday, October 28 when the vehicle he was travelling in struck a wall on York Street in St. George near the junction with Fort George Hill.

Daniel Augustus said his cousin was not just a relative, but a good friend as well. The pair went to Prospect Primary together.

“He was the true definition of a gentle giant,” Daniel told Bernews. “He would brighten a room with his attitude. He was the friendliest guy you would ever meet. If you didn’t love Kai, there was an issue with you, not him. I’m going miss having laughs with him.”

Alex Dickinson, who was close to Rakai said, “He has been a dear friend for over 13 years. To know Rakai was to love him.

“He made everyone feel like his best friend. He had an infectious laugh and joyful demeanour that was so rare. He was a gentle giant who will be an incredible miss to all who were blessed enough to know him.”

Dejon Simmons also described Rakai as the “Big teddy bear everyone loved. I have no bad memories of Kai, and it was never a bad vibe when he was around. I mean the guy is indescribable.”

Mr Simmons said Rakai was a “gentle giant” and a “gentle soul and fun to be around. When reading the headline this morning, he was honestly the absolute last person I would think to leave earth this early.”

Jevaughn ‘Squirrely’ Simons said they met several years ago while in the Royal Bermuda Regiment. Mr Simons said, “He was under me as a private, but I loved his attitude and drive.

“He was a great guy to know, and each time I would see him we would have a good conversation and catch up. His personality was second to none always helpful and willing to help his fellow man. He will be a great loss, and I truly will miss him.”

Emily Ross said, “Rakai never failed to brighten up your day. He radiated positivity. It was impossible not to smile around him, because his positivity was so honest and genuine you couldn’t help but feel it too.

“He was funny, he was kind, he was famous for his Kai bear hugs. He loved his mom. He encouraged you to find happiness in the simple things. He was grateful for every day. When I think of Kai, I think of happiness, humour and hope. A light has gone out.”
