October 25th, 1921 – October 15th, 2017

Our Darling mother – Marjorie Clara Davis [nee Gordon] died on October 15, 2017, just a few days before her 96th birthday in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Born in Roseau Dominica on October 25, 1921 to Dr. Edgar and Mrs. Clara Gordon, she was the youngest of four sisters, with two younger brothers. When she was a toddler the family moved to Bermuda, where she was always happiest outdoors tending her plants and her pet baby goat.

By the age of fourteen she [and her sisters] were aboard the Berengaria, on route to a convent in Britain; and eventually she faced the bombings and the horrors of the Second World War, as a nurse.

She always longed to see her mother again, but it would be twenty-five years before she could return to Bermuda after years of hardship, and extraordinary courage. Her marriage to a law student, Harold Stuart, failed and she was left destitute with two daughters – Sandra and Moira. She worked tirelessly to provide for them, and after a few years met and married her second husband Eric Davis. He was an exemplary husband and father, and after a few years Sharon was born and completed the family.

Marjorie eventually moved her family to Bermuda; saw her mother again shortly before she died, and spent thirty years there working to educate her girls and prepare them for their own independence and demonstrating her love for them in so many ways. She then retired and joined her youngest daughter, Sharon in Canada for the last and the happiest twenty four years of her life.
Marjorie’s life had been hard and often harsh. Yet her warmth, her generosity and her fascination with life drew people to her, including co-workers and others who became lifelong friends and admirers. She loved jazz and politics. She adored children and she lived for her beloved family.

Marjorie Davis is simply irreplaceable.

She will be lovingly missed by her daughters; Sandra Simmons [Millard] – Rochester, New York, Moira Stuart – London, England and Sharon Davis-Murdoch, [John]- Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, her grandson, Chris Murdoch [Stephanie] and her great grandson, Maceo Murdoch – Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
She was pre-deceased by sisters; Barbara, Joyce and Evelyn and brothers Hakim and Kenny Gordon and her only granddaughter, Shani Simmons.

Visitation will be held on October 19, 2017 from 7-9pm at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth, NS. The Funeral Service will be held at 11am, October 20, 2017 also at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street with the Rev. Father Irek Berm officiating.

Flowers are welcome or donations can be made to the Dartmouth General Hospital.
