Both the Premier, OBA and PLP expressed condolences following the passing of Jean Howes.

The PLP said they stand with all of Bermuda in sadness today, as they acknowledge the passing of Bermuda icon Jean Howes.

“The Progressive Labour Party stands with all of Bermuda in sadness as we acknowledge the passing of a Bermuda icon in Jean Howes,” a spokesperson said.

“Ms. Howes served our country in a special way over her 90 plus years of life, whether it was entertaining us annually with her variety show on television, whether it was educating our children about the dangers of rock throwing and the adverse effects it could have on one’s sight, and whether it was highlighting the difficulties of living with a disability such as blindness in our community.

“We thank Ms. Howes for her dedication to our community, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends during this most difficult time.”

Premier Michael Dunkley said, “On behalf of the Government and people of Bermuda, I extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of our beloved Jean Howes.

“Ms. Howes will truly be missed as she was a large part of our community, a well-known musician, television personality and one who did a tremendous amount of work in our schools, educating young people about the dangers of throwing rocks and how it could damage someone’s sight.

“She dedicated a great deal of her time to charitable work and despite being blind she had an independent spirit, led a full life and was an inspiration to us all.”

OBA Chair Lynne Woolridge said, “The One Bermuda Alliance is saddened by the passing of Ms Jean Howes, whose life stands as a shining example of the human spirit and its remarkable ability to overcome adversity.

“Ms Howes was blinded by a rock thrown at her when she was 11 years old. She went on to live a full life that was notable for its optimism, compassion and pluck.

“Ms Howes became one of the outstanding Bermudians of her time. She cared deeply for the community, particularly young Bermudians, and used her own trials and triumphs to help, advise and entertain others.

“With a deep sense of appreciation for a life well lived, we extend condolences to Ms Howes’s family and to all those who knew and loved her. May she rest in peace.”
